CURIOSITIES

We are in our local website!

The local website of Camarena has included an article about our project, enphasising how much these activities have helped us promote both our region and our food and drinks, as well as being a unique opportunity for our students to get to know other European cultures.

Italian Traditional Masks for Carnival

During Carnival, our traditional masks become protagonists.

Everyone loves them: tourists, adults, teenagers and children. In fact, wearing Carnival costumes and masks is a tradition truly embraced by all, regardless of their age.

In the last few years, Carnival has been more and more about dressing up like celebrities, politicians and cartoon characters, but our very own traditional Italian masks, everlasting and always recognizable, are the true essence of Carnival itself, as they have been representing this time of the year for centuries.

Here are some of the most famous!

The Three Wise Men

In Spain it is the Three Wise Men who bring 'Christmas' presents and gifts to well-behaved children, as well as grown-ups -though well-behaved ones are much harder to find! The evening of January 5th is absolutely magical: the Three Wise Men march on their luxurious and magnificent 'boats', carriages, camels, horses or whichever means of transport they fancy to use through all and every single town, from the largest cities to the tiniest village, accompanied by a complete set of exotic and colourful court -in Spain, instead of 'wise' they are considered as 'Their Royal Highnesses of the East', maybe because we are not used to meeting such powerful and rich wise people over here, being wisdom a kind of 'rara avis', strange and odd enough!

And in the early morning of January 6th the wonderful Men and their assistants slip into everyone's home and leave presents -some say there'll be but chunks of charcoal for misbehaviour! But nobody can seriously support the story.

Sometimes, the Maggie even have enough time to taste the sweets and drinks children leave for them before going to sleep.

So, kids, behave! Remember to turn in early tomorrow evening, and sleep tight!
